*sigh* Itazura na kiss, where do i start?
So i had been hearing a lot of my otaku friends going on about how sweet and adorable this anime was for a while now and as much of a sucker for a good shoujo anime i am, i could not resist not checking it out for myself and so i did. And so i regretted it. Immensely, to add.
This is what MAL has to say about INK, ‘Ever since she entered high school, Kotoko Aihara wanted to be in the same class as Naoki Irie. The only problem is that Irie is the smartest student in school contrast to Kotoko being one of the dumbest. Now in her 3rd year of high school, she still isn’t there. However, one day her home gets destroyed and the only place left to go to was Irie’s home. Now that she lives close to him, will their relationship be the same, or will it become greater than it is?‘
Sounds good enough, right? Wrong! What MAL failed to mention was that our ‘heroine’ is the Japanese equivalent of a jersey shore bimbo with an IQ of a bucket thats full of dirty mop water and the ‘hero’ is a conceited, constipated sociopath who thinks of himself as a superior entity bestowed upon our world simply because he’s ‘smart’ and has an eidetic memory. By the way, having a photographic memory does not mean that one is smarter, as in one has better critical thinking or problem solving skills. It simply means you remember everything, including the methods that make it easier to solve problems, making you seem ‘smarter’ as a side effect. Anyway, If you think about it, these two make a perfect couple. You know why? Because the dude is a psycho and the chick is a masochist with zero self esteem.
Whats so wrong about this perfect couple is that their whole relationship is based on co dependency. The guy lacks respect for the girl as a human being, loves establishing his ‘power’ by making her jealous, and wont hesitate to slap her in front of another woman who was flirting with him in front of his wife nor hesitate to play egoistical mind games with her just after their first kiss. The girl is needy and well, delusional. She refuses to consider the possibility that the only reason Naoki clings on to her now is because he’s gotten used to being chased by her and knows no other chick will give him an ego boost by having such an inferiority complex nor take his b.s like Kotoko does.
Also, what’s is the deal with the people in this anime playing hard to get and having physical altercations with their significant others instead of solving their issues like civilized human beings? I counted at least three such pairings. If you dont like someone, dont go out with them, dont marry them unless you genuinely want to give yourself a chance with them or if you start liking them because of some quality that they have and for goodness sake dont slap them around like misbehaving pets. Dont be with someone just to settle for who ever will take your ish so you can hold your head up high and think of yourself as a blessing to them. Honestly, what kind of relationship is one doomed to have if they cant get past acting ‘cool’ with the other? A very uncomfortable one i presume.
Yes, INK had some funny moments but over all it was a disturbingly unhealthy anime promoting dysfunctional relationships, superficiality and emotional dependency. I do not agree with its message. Here’s hoping Naoki and Kotoko make better parents than they made husband and wife. Amen.
